Tips for Dog Owners

The USA has the most dogs per country on Earth – over 78 million. Each year, 5 million puppies are born in the USA. That’s a lot of dogs! If you’ve never owned a puppy dog, there are some things you should know. At birth, puppies don’t yet see or hear, or have teeth. And, as little ones, they sleep a lot – typically up to 14 hours a day. Puppies suckle their mommy’s teats for milk to help them grow during the first couple weeks. After about a month, they’re able to eat solid foods.

Between 6-weeks-old and 6-months-old, puppies grow quickly, and they need a lot of food, so owners should be feeding them three times a day. Later on in life, they can eat twice a day.

At 2-months-old, consider getting your puppy spayed or neutered. There are so many animals stuck in shelters due to overpopulation, so that’s a humane reason to have your pet “fixed”.

After they’re three or four-months-old, it’s time to teach puppies that it’s not proper to poop in the house. Indeed, you need to take them outside to do their “business”. Reward them with a treat after they’re successful. It’s good to get them in the habit of going outside to poop on a consistent, regular schedule, such as morning, noon and night.

Taking care of puppies is a lot like taking care of human babies. And if you’re like most people, your pet puppy or dog is literally like your child.
